Biography

1851 CENSUS - High Street, Shambles, Sevenoaks, Kent, England. Richard Burgess, 40, is an Agricultural Labourer, born Sevenoaks, Kent, and his wife, Sarah, 34, was born Chiddingstone, Kent. Four of their children were born Sundridge, Kent: Mary (14), William (10), Ann (8) and Henry (4). The youngest two - James (2) and Edward (2 months) - were born locally, at Sevenoaks. Only William and Ann attend school. [1] [2]

By 1861, the Burgess family had moved to Seal Street, Seal, Kent, where Richard (50) still worked as an Agricultural labourer. He was a good provider as all the children were still at home, except for William, plus three more children had arrived in the ten year interval - Elizabeth (7) was born Sevenoaks, the others born Seal - Frances (2), and Emily (1). Ann (17), along with Mary (25), probably helped their 45-year-old mother, Sarah, with the household chores and the younger children as they aren't listed with an occupation. Henry (14), James (11) and Edward (9) are already working in agriculture. Seven-year-old Elizabeth is the only one attending school. [3] [4]
