Brisbanes First Theatre - Date of Broadcast Wednesday, 23 May 2001
Brisbanes Performing Arts Complex is situation on the south side of the river. The theatres within the complex showcase some of the finest productions in Queensland. Its location is appropriate because it's very close to the site of Brisbane's first theatre.
Mr Croft's Aphitheatre opened in 1847 near the present site of the South Brisbane Railway Station. At this time South Brisbane was the chief port for Brisbane and the area was populated by bullockys and sailors. And to cater to their needs many sly grog pubs - which made South Brisbane a pretty wild place.
Crofts theatre soon became a popular centre of entertainment with many in the audience travelling from the north side of the river. Very few bullockys or sailors came to the theatre though. No, the audience on the whole consisted of conservative respectable folk.
Buried Bowenfels, Lithgow. Died from an extended illness.
