Bond Burnett was born about 1735, probably in Virginia Colony. His birth is estimated from the 1782 Amherst County tax list in which Bond is listed with two tithables, presumably himself and a son 21 or older. A Bond Burnett died about 1801 in Hanover County, Virginia (per tax lists), but it's unclear if these are the same men.
Bond Burnett's wife was Isbel/Isabell per two land sales in Virginia. No source has been located for Horsely as her name at birth.
Bond and Isabel's marriage is often given as 15 Jul 1756 in Caroline County, Virginia. This is highly unlikely given Caroline and Albemarle Counties are about 100 miles distant. There's no indication this family was wealthy (no slaves or large land holdings), so it makes it even more implausible. Until a source is found, we can only presume they were likely married in Virginia Colony.
Three children are substantiated for Bond Burnett, all from the 1788 Amherst County personal property tax record in which they were named as sons of Bond (also see below)[3]. All 3 would have been born mid-1767 or earlier to have been 21 by mid-1788.
15 Jul 1761: In Amherst County, Bond Burnett witnessed the transfer of ownership of an enslaved person. It read: Rowland Horsley to Charles Goodman who married my daughter Elizabeth a slave Roger. Wit Jeremiah Burnett, Michajah Via, Bond Burnett [4].
Tax lists for Amherst County began in 1782. Between 1782 and 1790, the listings for Burnett surnames were as follows. Tithables (white men 21 and over) are 1 unless shown otherwise.:
He married Isabel Horsley (1737-1789) on 15 Jul 1765 in Virginia. They had the following children: Rowland Burnett (1759-1790); Richmond Burnett (1762-1825) Zachariah Burnett (1764-1816); Bond Burnett (1765-1837); Martha Patsey Burnett (1767-1850); William Burnett (1768-1811). Listed under the name Bond Burnett he served in the Revolutionary War. Captain Massie's Company. 6th Virginia Regiment of Continental Forces, Commanded by Lt Colonel Charles Simms. [5] [6] Revolutionary War rolls at Fold 3 [NOTE: It seems highly unlikely this is the same Bond Burnett as he would have been well into his 40s with several young children at home. More evidence besides a common name is needed.]
There is no evidence that he is the son of Jeremiah Burnett bn 1718. The research paper in the images sections shows that the Jeremiah born 1718 did not exist. Research on this line is being conducted by the Hanover County Research Project at FTDNA. [1]
Witt-1888 06:12, 22 January 2024 (UTC): Research is ongoing into the Burnetts of Albemarle/Amherst, Hanover, and Patrick Counties in Virginia. Tax lists and records are suggesting two Bond Burnetts of similar age, but are not conclusive. Y-DNA is helping elucidate distinct BURNETT paternal lines, but additional Burnett men are needed for Y-DNA testing. Please let me know if you can help.
Witt-1888 04:43, 22 January 2024 (UTC): There appears to be no source for a first name of Benjamin, so I have removed it. Every record located to-date, used only the name Bond. Also, middle names were rare prior to US independence[7].
