Biography

Bond Burnett was born about 1735, probably in Virginia Colony. His birth is estimated from the 1782 Amherst County tax list in which Bond is listed with two tithables, presumably himself and a son 21 or older. A Bond Burnett died about 1801 in Hanover County, Virginia (per tax lists), but it's unclear if these are the same men.

Bond Burnett's wife was Isbel/Isabell per two land sales in Virginia. No source has been located for Horsely as her name at birth.

  1. 9 Jul 1767 in Fredericksville Parish, Albemarle County. Deed; wife Isbel, buyer Nathanial Harlow; 50 ac on south bank of N. Fork James River; Wm Via line.[1]
  2. 17 Sep 1789 in Amherst County. Bond Burnett & wife, Isabell, to Jacob Pucket 50 ac on Davis Cr formerly tract of Jno. Wade, dec., joining the road. Wit: Jas. McAlexander, Jr; Wm Burnett; Alex McAlexander. [2]

Marriage

Bond and Isabel's marriage is often given as 15 Jul 1756 in Caroline County, Virginia. This is highly unlikely given Caroline and Albemarle Counties are about 100 miles distant. There's no indication this family was wealthy (no slaves or large land holdings), so it makes it even more implausible. Until a source is found, we can only presume they were likely married in Virginia Colony.

Substantiated Children

Three children are substantiated for Bond Burnett, all from the 1788 Amherst County personal property tax record in which they were named as sons of Bond (also see below)[3]. All 3 would have been born mid-1767 or earlier to have been 21 by mid-1788.

  1. Zachariah Burnett (bef.1768-), m. Dorcas Small.
  2. Bond Burnett Jr. (abt.1765-1837)
  3. Micajah Burnett (Bond was listed as Micajah's father in his 1789 marriage record.)

Deeds and Legal Records

15 Jul 1761: In Amherst County, Bond Burnett witnessed the transfer of ownership of an enslaved person. It read: Rowland Horsley to Charles Goodman who married my daughter Elizabeth a slave Roger. Wit Jeremiah Burnett, Michajah Via, Bond Burnett [4].

Listed under the name Bond Burnett he served in the Revolutionary War. Captain Massie's Company. 6th Virginia Regiment of Continental Forces, Commanded by Lt Colonel Charles Simms. [5] [6] Revolutionary War rolls at Fold 3 [NOTE: It seems highly unlikely this is the same Bond Burnett as he would have been well into his 40s with several young children at home. More evidence besides a common name is needed.]

Research Notes

There is no evidence that he is the son of Jeremiah Burnett bn 1718. The research paper in the images sections shows that the Jeremiah born 1718 did not exist. Research on this line is being conducted by the Hanover County Research Project at FTDNA. [1]

Witt-1888 06:12, 22 January 2024 (UTC): Research is ongoing into the Burnetts of Albemarle/Amherst, Hanover, and Patrick Counties in Virginia. Tax lists and records are suggesting two Bond Burnetts of similar age, but are not conclusive. Y-DNA is helping elucidate distinct BURNETT paternal lines, but additional Burnett men are needed for Y-DNA testing. Please let me know if you can help.

Witt-1888 04:43, 22 January 2024 (UTC): There appears to be no source for a first name of Benjamin, so I have removed it. Every record located to-date, used only the name Bond. Also, middle names were rare prior to US independence[7].

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Bond by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Bond:

I've found no evidence for Bond Burnett as father of Richmond Burnett and Martha Burnett so I'll be detaching them. Richmond appeared in the 1788 Amherst Property Tax list as a separate tithe from Bond (who named his 3 sons). In 1787 Bond had 4 tithes (himself and 3 men 21+ which suggests Richmond was not his son (unless he just turned 21 and was living separate from his father, which is highly unlikely). While there's a likely connection, Bond could be an uncle rather than a father.

What is the evidence that Benjamin Bond Burnett had a son named Richmond? Please post or share.

Bond Burnett is NOT a son of Jeremiah Burnett bn 1718 as this Jeremiah did NOT exist. Jeremiah was completely made up by June Bork. Also Bond Burnett is NOT descended from John and Lucretia Burnett of Essex County VA. Bond is a completely different YDNA group and doesn't have a common ancestor with John and Lucretia for over 10,000 years.

Are you checking on the wife/wives of Benjamin Bond Burnett? Three of the children listed currently would have been conceived prior to a 1756 marriage to Isabel Horsely.

I've tried your link in paragraph 1 of this biography, but it is "in error" on each of three tries. Can you give us the correct link please? I have many Ward names in Berg-1880, & my Gpa Wm Ward Burnett is it seems great at passing his genes to his progeny.
Burnett-1804 and Burnett-267 appear to represent the same person because: Burnett-1804 has no spouse or children attached? Please proceed with merge of these obvious duplicates.

Burnett-1804 and Burnett-267 are not ready to be merged because: Either different wife or additional wife. Each had children that need to be placed with appropriate Mom.

Burnett-1804 and Burnett-267 appear to represent the same person because: Still work to be done, but these are duplicates and should be merged.

Burnett-1814 and Burnett-267 appear to represent the same person because: matching date and place of birth and death

Burnett-2247 and Burnett-267 appear to represent the same person because: matching vitals and duplicate wife

Burnett-2247 and Burnett-1804 are not ready to be merged because: Proposed that Burnett-1804 and Burnett-1814 be merged, since they are managed by the same person. If this Benjamin Bond Burnett was married twice with different children, merge and create a second wife and children within the main profile. Then Burnett-2247 can again be compared to this merged profile. They are the same person, but have many differences in dates and siblings. Thank you ````
