Biography

"From the Records of James Clinton Burns' Department of History Western State Teachers College. Macomb, Illinois. In oder that future generations may know something of their distinguished ancestors, I am determined to furnish the facts and records, as I am at this late date, the only living person who knows about them and is able to supply them. -Professor James C. Burns. 1926." ^[1]

James C. Burns married Ida J. Carey 4 Sep 1878 in Greene, Ohio. ^[2] Their children include:

1. Clinton was the head of the Standard Oil Company in Northern China for 16 years. He took his mother over and she spent 2 years with him in Eastern Asia and the Phillipines. Our homes are filled with oriental rugs, Laces, silver and furniture. He is now a broker in New York City.

2. Deane, is a chemist, and is Superintendent of a chemical plant in Elyria, Ohio. He is a civic and religious leader in his community.

3. Josephine, taught in the University of Illinois. She married Dr. Glasgow, an Entomologist of the State of New York, and lives in Albany.

4. Ruth is equally well educated. She is married to Arthur R. Lord an engineer, from Massachusetts. He is superintendent of works in Chicago.

Obituary

"Death came suddenly to Prof. J. Clinton Burns on Saturday, August 1930, about 1 o'clock, in the Presbyterian Church at Windy Gap, West Finley. Prof. Burns had driven from Elyria, Ohio in the forenoon with his son to attend the reunion of the Carroll family. He had just entered the church, and sat down on a seat near the front, and began to look over a few notes he had written, as he was to make the address of the afternoon. A moment later, he gasped and his head fell over onto the shoulder of a man sitting at his side. He expired immediately. His son said that he had been in excellent spirits throughout the day and was greatly pleased to be back among his relatives in the town where he was born and spent his childhood. He was survived by the above mentioned two sons and two daughters, also by a grandson, Harold Burns, now at the University of Colorado." ^[9]
