Biography

Nathaniel was born in 1761 to parents as yet unknown. He served four terms of enlistment in the Revolutionary Army.[1] When he first offered to enlist, being but 4 ft. 4 in. tall, he was refused. He put "rags" in his boots until his head touched the peg at 4 ft 4 in. He was accepted. He fought in the Revolutionary War and married after he mustered out. Because Maine wasn't one of the 13 colonies, it was included with the Massachusetts regiments.

His youngest son, Almond, moved to Ohio and studied at Ohio University[2], becoming a physician. Around age 77, Nathaniel moved to Ohio to be close to Almond. The 1840 US Census shows Nathaniel and Rachel living with daughter Harriet and her husband Josiah Hook, who might have moved to Ohio with them. Daughter Nancy Going also settled in Ohio, but sons Nathaniel Jr. and Levi remained in Maine. Nathaniel died in Ohio at 81 years old.

From his will, it is apparent he owned a lot of property in both Maine and New York. At least some of it came from Land Grants, but locating those has proven difficult.
