William Burtenshaw was the son of Edward Burtenshaw and Mary Davey. He was baptised in the parish of Edburton, Sussex on 31 October 1802.[1][2][3]
William married Frances Blann on 3 February 1823 in Edburton.

They had a number of children.
During the 1841 census William and Frances were living in Fulking. Five of their children, (Maria, Selina, Benjamin, William and Edward) were recorded as living with them at that stage.

In 1851 he was living in the census parish of West Thatchington, his wife Frances, Edward, as well as another son Charles were living there. He was recorded as an agricultural labourer.
