Charles was born in 1885. He was the son of John Burton and Emeline Broad.
He enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force on 15 February 1916, embarking from Adelaide on HMAT Afric A19 on 9 June 1916 with the 43rd Infantry Battalion. Charles was killed in action in Belgium on 14 October 1917, with no known grave he is commemorated at the Menin Gate Memorial, Belgium.
