Biography

Rachel was born between 1809 - 1811, Ireland . Parents being John Busby and Jane McDowall.

Note: Birthplace Ireland - I am leaning towards her birth being Ireland, reason being the first Census record I have found her with her family is 1841, birthplace recorded as Ireland, thereafter her birthplace has been recorded the same as all the other family members Ayrshire. In 1871 Census birthplace of Ireland is recorded again for her.

In 1829 Rachel and her husband to be Robert Allison booked in order to marry on the 29th September 1829 and then married on the 15th October that year in the local parish of Kirkmichael Ayrshire, Scotland, by the Rev David Kennedy Minister of parish. [1]

1841 Residence Auchnairny Cottage, Kirkmichael, Ayr. Rachel Alison age recorded as 30 years, birthplace Ireland, her husband Robert Alison is 35, occupation Cotton Hand Loom Weaver, birthplace Ayrshire. Children in the household Jane Alison 10, Hugh Alison 9, Samuel Alison 7, Robert Alison 5, John Alison 4 and William Alison who is 2 years old. All the children were born in Ayrshire. [2]

Note: Surname recorded as (Alison) with one L in census transcriptions.

1842 birth of their 6th son James birth registered in Kirkmichael, Ayr. Robert's occupation was recorded as a Weaver in Auchnairey [3]

1843 Rachel and Robert have another daughter named Rachel birth and Baptism registered in Maybole, Ayrshire. [4]

1845 Mary is born in Maybole, Ayr. July 1846 young Mary dies of "Cold Fever" just 7 moths old , Maybole, Crofshill, Interment Kirkmichael Ayr. [5]

1851 Residence Content Street, Wallacetown, Saint. Quivox, Ayrshire. Rachel is 42, birthplace recorded as Kirkmichael, Ayr. (?) her husband Robert is 45 and working as a Carter, birthplace Kirkmichael, Ayrshire.Children in the household Hugh Allison age 19 , Samuel Allison age 17, Robert Allison age 16, John Allison Age 13, all 4 boys are working as Hand Loom Weavers in Cotton , William Allison is 11 years, birthplace Maybole, Ayr, James Allison age 9 birthplace Kirkmichael, Ayr, Rachel Allison Age 7 birthplace Maybole, Ayr, Mary Allison age 3, birthplace Kirkmichael, Ayr , these 4 children are recorded as attending School ( Scholar) and young Archibald is only 7 months old birthplace Ayrshire. Note: There is one child missing on this census night Jane she would be about 20 years old.

1852 Interment for Robert of Content St, Wallacetown, age 40 Years - Scotlands People has 2 identical documents with 2 different reference years, they being : 19 July 1852 and 19 July 1853. [7]

In 1858 William her son aged 19 years old died due to Phthisis in Wallacetown, Saint Quivox, recorded as buried at the Newton Churchyard. [8]

Note: Robert is recorded on the record as deceased .

1861 Residence 70 Hill Street, 2 roomed residence. Rachel is now a widow at 52 years old and working as a thread winder, her 3 remaining children living with her are , James 19, who is working as a Moulder, Mary 13 working in a thread mill, and Archibald who is 10 years old. Recorded birthplace for all is Kirkmichael, Ayrshire.... [9]

Note: Missing from the household is Rachel who is about 18 years old.

1863 April James son, age 21 years married Agnes McLeod at the Dunchatton Manse , Glasgow. His occupation is that of an Iron Moulder and is living at 20 Burrells Lane, Glasgow. [10]

June 1867 daughter Rachel who is 23 years old, residence 110 Duke St, Glasgow, married Alexander Kean in Dennistoun, sister Mary was the witness. [11]

1869 Rachel's daughter Mary died at the age of 21 years, due to Phthisis, usual residence 110 Duke St. [12]

April 1871 Residence 110 Duke St, Glasgow. Rachel is 63 years old, occupation housekeeper, birthplace recorded as Ireland. Children in the household Archibald is now 20 years old, occupation Cooper, birthplace Ayrshire, Samuel is 38 years, occupation letter currier ? (courier) , birthplace Lanarkshire Crosshill.[13]

1871 December 25th, Archibald, Rachel's youngest son aged 21 years, usual residence 110 Duke St, died due to Laryngitis. Informant was his brother Samuel who was also present at his death.. [14]

1876 Rachel's granddaughter, Margaret Hamilton Kean, from her daughter Rachel, died from Scarlentina, either whilst staying with her or visiting her at 110 Duke St, Glasgow[15]

1877 Rachel's daughter Rachel , aged 33 years, died in the Royal Infirmary, Glasgow.[16]

19 October 1880 Rachel suffered with Acute Bronchitis, Dropsy and died. The widow of Robert Allison occupation recorded as a Railway Carter. Rachel's usual residence at time of death was 110 Duke Street, Glasgow, age at death 72 years. Parents being John Busby occupation Farmers Labourer (dec) and mother Jane m.s. McDowall Busby (dec). Informant of death was her son James Allison .[17]

( Note: in 1881 James Allison and his family are now living at 110 Duke St. )
