Michael Butz was born on May 1, 1764 in Lower Mt. Bethel Township, Northampton County, Province of Pennsylvania, son of Hans Michael Butz (1726–1779) and Maria Elizabeth Weber (<1730–1795).
Michael (23) married Margaretha Catharina Keller (17) (born on April 6, 1770 in Hamilton Township, Northampton (now Monroe County), Pennsylvania) on December 11, 1787 in Easton, Northampton County. Their children were:
