  12. Source: #S00007 Page: Unknown newsletter article. Words from West County by Nancy Ortega. Data: Text: I remember the first time I met Catherine Papin. She was working at the gift shop desk at the hospital, happily chatting with a family member of a patient. I was impressed by her warm smile, and the way she encouraged the person to whom she was talking. I was also struck by her strong elegance. With her sparkling eyes, straight posture and white hair surrounding her head like a crown, she was a joy to behold. As we introduced ourselves, I was delighted by her quick mind and ready wit. I was also astounded that this dynamo of a lady could be the 86 years old she proudly claimed. CONT That first meeting was over seven years ago. Since then, I have learned a lot about Catherine; all of it confirming my first positive impression and adding more. CONT I learned Catherine had been through many heartaches and trials, but still enjoyed and was thankful for each day. Through the good and bad times, she still had managed to raise her children and grandchildren with get love and dignity. She never minced words, but stated clearly what she meant; usually with great wisdom. CONT I also learned that she had worked more hours at the hospital gift shop that year I met her than any any other volunteer. She not only delivered flowers and visitors to the right hospital rooms, but delivered compassion, words of comfort, and much needed humor as well. I never thought of Catherine as old; her great inner strength shone through too strongly to allow that. CONT As the last seven years passed, Catherine's health gradually limited the amount of time she could volunteer at the gift shop. Finally, to hear her great distress, she had to give it up. CONT Then last week, at age 93, we lost Catherine all together as God called her home. I'm sure that even though we grieve, there is rejoicing in Heaven that such a great lady has come home. CONT The "pink ladies," our hospital auxiliary volunteers, have taught me, and are continuing to teach me endless lessons on the true meaning of compassion, selflessness, energy and love. As Catherine so gracefully showed, age does not have to limit the good deeds a person can achieve. CONT In loving memory of Catherine Papin, Sally Abt, and Carolyn Schuler, I thank the ladies of the Ste. Genevieve County Memorial Hospital Auxiliary with all my heart. Catherine happened to be the first of you that I met. You all are very special treasures. FOOT Unknown newsletter article. Words from West County by Nancy Ortega., Ste. Genevieve, Missouri. Notes

Note N00500The 1930 census has JBC listed as 34 at the time of his first marriage. This is inconsistent with earlier census data showing him married to Elizabeth Hanagan. It is, however, consistent with the known marriage date for his second wife ACU.
