John wrote his will on 18 October 1859; it was proved in 1860.[1] The will names wife Sarah and these children:

The will also names grandchildren James Davidson and Sarah Elizabeth Davidson.
A biography of David Robb, husband of John's granddaughter Martha Caldwell, in History of Carroll and Harrison Counties, also gives a brief biography of John.[2] According to this biography, John was born in Westmoreland, Pennsylvania on 1 June 1780. John's first wife was Elizabeth Birney, and they had one son, Robert Reed Caldwell; his second wife was Sarah Reed, and they had the following children:
