Biography

Samuel was born in 1832. He was a farmer and politician in Riverside. In 1890, he moved with his family to British Columbia.[1] In 1893, the Daily Sun (Saint John, January 20 1893) reported:[2]

Hopewell Hill - Jan. 18 - Samuel J. Calhoun, formerly of this place, who is here from New Westminster, B.C., will remain a month or so in the county. Mr. Calhoun has been two years and a half in those parts. Among the former residents of Albert County who are doing well in British Columbia are: Wesley Peck, [Samuel's brother] John Calhoun, Capt. J.P. Hamilton of New Westminster; Juda Wells, Fletcher Stiles, Harvey Smith and Joseph Smith of La Conner; L.M. Wood, formerly editor of the Maple Leaf, now occupying an editorial position on the Seattle Post Intelligencer. Mr. Peck is a prominent contractor of New Westminster. Harvey Smith owns one of the finest farms in that section; Miss Flora Calhoun, formerly of Hopewell, is said to be the most expert stenographer in New Westminster, if not the province.

Further information about his life in BC appeared in the Albert Maple Leaf a year or so later (March 28 1895):[3]

Samuel J. Calhoun, for many years a resident of this village and a former councillor for the Municipality of Albert, N.B. is living at Vernon, B.C., on the Fraser. His eldest daughter is a music teacher in New Westminster and his second daughter, Miss Flora E. Calhoun, who was a graduate of the shorthand dept. of the St. John Business College, is said to be one of the most expert stenographers in British Columbia. The friends here regret to learn of the dangerous illness of Mr. Calhoun's youngest daughter, Mabel Calhoun, a teacher in the academy at New Westminster and a lady of unusual ability.

He died in 1904.
