Research Notes

The 1850 census gives John's age as 80 years old, hence a birth year of about 1770.[2] But the birth year can be narrowed to 1766 from tax lists in Powhattan Co. John was taxed in Powhattan Co., Virginia, from 1784 to 1788 as John Carden Jr. under his father John Carden. In 1784-1786 John was 16-21 years old and in 1787 he was taxed as a male 21 and older so he was probably born about 1766.[3]

John’s oldest son, David, was born about 1792 which fits the time line of a marriage in 1791. A brief biography of David Carden, published in 1874, states David was born on the James River in Virginia.[4] Buckingham Co. lies on the James River.

John Carden was in Clarke Co GA by 1802 when he was taxed on 50 acres of land on the Oconee River. By 1807 he had moved to 159 acres on Wildcat Creek.[5]

In 1819 John bought 20 acres in Jasper Co., GA (DB B:422) and was enumerated there in the 1820 census. [6] His son David married Nelly Deadwilder in Jasper Co in 1814.[7] In 1821 John’s son Benjamin D. Carden drew land from Jasper Co. The land lay in Monroe, later Pike Co.[8]

In 1829 John bought land in Pike Co., GA (DB B:450) and lived there until his death. In 1833 John’s son David bought land in Pike Co. from his brother Benjamin D. Carden (DB C:474). In 1838 in Pike Co. Andrew J. Carden married Adaline Crawford.[9] In 1839 John Carden Jr. married Elizabeth Ann Land.[10] Andrew is probably the 10-15 year old male and John Jr is probably the 20-30 year old male in John Sr’s household in the 1830 census in Pike Co.
