William was born in 1879. He was the son of James Carey and Ellen Russell. In 1880, the family was living in Key West, Florida. His mother's name of Helen does not agree with the Ellen Russell Carey mentioned in the Michael Carey descendant file. However, the census taker could have misheard the informant and written down Helen instead of Ellen.[1] In 1885, the family was still in Key West. The census listed the mother as Ellen this time.[2]
