Biography

Thomas emigrated to Australia leaving behind his family in Staffordshire, England. He never divorced his first wife, yet remarried in England and had five children (source R. Thomas).

He is the son of Thomas Carey and Ellen Harvey. [1] Thomas was baptised at Longton, Staffordshire on 28 Apr 1822. [2]

In the 1841 Census, Thomas was listed in the home of his parents at Wetley Abbey, Cheddleton, Cheadle, Staffordshire, England. His father was listed as of independent means, and Thomas was the eldest of nine siblings aged from 18 to 4 years old. [3]

Thomas Carey and Louisa Smith married at Longton St James, Staffordshire on 01 Aug 1846. Thomas, a bachelor, was recorded as of Fenton, father's name Thomas Carey, a manufacturer, like Thomas Jnr. Louisa was listed as a widow. Her father was recorded as John Joule, a brewer. [4] At the time of the 1851 Census, Thomas and Lucy Carey were listed living at 206 Tyndall Street, Kings Norton, Staffordshire. Thomas was working as a Merchant's Clerk. Also in their home was nine year old Edward Smith, listed as son-in-law, presumably Lucy's son, and Thomas's 22 year old sister Sarah who was visiting, and who had an independent income. [5] In the next census, Louisa Carey is listed as a widow living in Kings Norton, with her son Edward, now 19 and a Stockbroker's clerk. Louisa is listed as a lady. [6]

Thomas is said to have migrated to Australia some time before the 1861 Census, leaving Louisa and her son behind.

Thomas was born in 1822. The family lived in the area known as the Staffordshire Potteries.

Thomas' father passed away in 1844, leaving an estate with significant earthenware manufacturing and retail businesses. Thomas Jr. declined to continue the manufacturing business, and it was sold at auction in autumn 1847.[7]

At age 22 in summer 1846, Thomas married 29-year-old widow Louisa Joule Smith, who was daughter to successful brewer John Joule at nearby Stone, Staffordshire.[8] The pair, along with step-son Edward Smith, are found in the 1851 census living in the Birmingham suburb of Kings Norton, at Tyndall Street, with Thomas listed as Merchant's Clerk.

It appears Thomas for a time continued working with the merchant portion of his father's pottery business, the executors operating a significant retail shop in Cork, Ireland, and participating in that town's 1852 exhibition.[9] The following year the Cork premises were listed for sale.[10] However, it appears at least part of Thomas' family continued living in County Cork, at Queenstown.[11]

It is currently unclear where and when Thomas passed away, but it was before the 1861 census was collected, since wife Louisa was listed as widow, still living in Kings Norton, but now at Regent Place.
