Stephen Carley was born on 23 Dec 1883 in Badlesmere, Kent, England to Stephen Carley and Sarah Ann Millen.[1]

Royal Navy

On 18 Sep 1899, Stephen joined the Royal Navy.[2] He told the Navy that he was born in 1880, although he was actually born in 1883, that is, he said that he was 18 when he was actually 15. This meant that he was able to start his service as a Stoker 2nd Class rather than as a "Boy". Also, his pensionable service would have begun immediately instead of when he turned 18.

He saw service on a variety of ships including HMS Albion which saw service at the China Station. In 1901, he was at the Pembroke shore barracks at Chatham.[3] He began as a Stoker 2nd Class but ended as a Stoker Petty Officer.

He was invalided out of the Navy as medically unfit on 16 Sep 1914, just before the outbreak of the 1st World War.

Family

Stephen married Emily Jane Beer on 1 Jul 1911 at St James church in Sheldwich, Kent.[4] [5]

The notice in the paper at the time reads:
CARLEY--BEER.--July 1st, at Sheldwich Church, by the Rev. E. S. Colebrook, Stephen Carley, of Badlesmere, to Emily Jane Beer, second daughter of Mr. Fred Beer, Rose and Crown, Perry Wood, Selling.
[6]

Stephen and Emily had three children:

  • Margaret Sophia Carley 1914-1997
  • Frederick Archibald Carley 1916-1945
  • James Lewis Carley 1923-

By 1921, after he had left the Navy, Stephen found a job as a motor driver for Shepherd Neame & Co., a Faversham brewery. [7]

Australia

Sometime between the birth of his third child in Faversham in 1923 and 1926, Stephen left England and emigrated to Australia. His family followed in 1926.

They settled in Punchbowl, New South Wales, a suburb of Sydney. He remained there for the rest of his life working as an engine driver.[8] [9] [10]

Stephen Carley died sometime after 1954 in Australia.
