Biography

Swedish Roots
Gert Carlson has Swedish ancestors

Gert was born on 10 August 1916 in Tower, St Louis, Minnesota, USA. She was the daughter of Gustaf Daniel Carlsson and Anna Elizabeth (Pearson) Carlson.[1]

She was raised in Tower, Minnesota in the Mesabi Iron Ore Range.[2] She was the third of six children, two boys and four girls born to Gus and Annie Carlson. Her father worked as a miner in the nearby Soudan Mine. [3]

When she graduated from high school, she attended the American School of Business in Des Moines, Iowa. [4] Then she moved to Washington, D.C. to take a job in the Bureau of Engraving, printing money. There she met Francis Schmehl, whom she dated for seven years before finally agreeing to marry at the age of 28 on 19 September 1944 in District of Columbia, USA. [5] The couple had 4 children: Elizabeth Ann, Paul Lawrence, David Joseph, and James Walter.

After moving to Lincoln, Nebraska when her husband accepted a position at the university, she enrolled in classes and eventually earned her bachelor's degree in 1980.[4]

She was a former member of the Sheridan ELCA Lutheran Church from 1968 to 1980, a member of Evangelical United ELCA Lutheran Church, the Faculty Wives of UNL, and the Historic Society, and a life member of the National Association of Retired Government Employees.[4] She was a devout Christian whose last words to her daughter were, "Please don't read me the Bible anymore. I've read the Bible all my life. Tell me some jokes."

She died at the age of 83 on19 June 2000 in Lincoln, Nebraska.[6] and was buried on June 22, 2000 in Bentonville, Benton County, Arkansas, United States.[6] beside her beloved husband.
