Note on Identity

Be aware there were two James Carltons of similar age each married to an Elizabeth. The James Carlton born in 1730 married Elizabeth Sherwin and settled in Rindge, New Hampshire where he died in 1815. The other James Carlton was born in 1726 son of Nehemiah, married Elizabeth Currier, and resided in Methuen where he died in 1798. Here is the profile for the other James: James Carleton (1726-1798)

Biography

JAMES CARLTON,[1] born at Andover, 2 Mar 1730 son of John Carlton and Hannah Barker;[2] James died at Rindge, NH, 20 May 1815;[3] married at Andover (also recorded at Boxford), 25 Aug 1761,[4] ELIZABETH SHERWIN, born at Boxford, 14 Nov 1740 daughter of Jonathan Sherwin and Mary Lurvey;[5] Elizabeth died at Rindge, 26 May 1830.[6]

James Carlton was born in Andover. He was a farmer and a cooper by trade. James married Elizabeth Sherwin of Boxford, and the young family was first in Andover where their eldest four children were born. The family then relocated to Rindge, New Hampshire about 1770 where they remained.

On 30 Nov 1769, James Carlton of Andover, yeoman alias cooper, with his wife Elizabeth, in consideration of £100, conveyed to Samuel Phillips of Andover a 16-acre tract of pasture and woodland that had been willed to James by his uncle Benjamin Barker. On 21 May 1770, James Carlton cooper of Andover with his wife Elizabeth, in consideration of £50, conveyed to Josiah Long of Andover one acre of land with a dwelling house in Andover.[7]

On 13 May 1772, James Carlton yeoman of Rindge, for payment of £44, purchased 18 acres in Rindge from Joseph Worcester of Rindge. On 17 February 1813, James purchased a 60-acre tract in Rindge from Peter Perham for payment of one hundred dollars.[8]

James signed the oath of allegiance at Rindge in 1776. He served as tax collector. A building on the Carlton farm was used as an early schoolhouse, and Mrs. Elizabeth Carlton was a teacher there prior to 1774.[9]

The household of James Carleton was eight persons at Rindge in 1790: four males 16 and over and four females.[10] In 1810, James and his son David were co-heads of a household of six persons: one male 45 and over, one male 26 to 45, one female 45 and over, one female 26 to 44, one male 10 to 15 and one female under 10. Son Obadiah Carleton occupied the next property.[11]

On 1 April 1814, James Carleton of Rindge, in consideration of two thousand dollars and a bond to provide support to James and his wife Elizabeth during their lives, conveyed the entirety of his personal estate to David Carleton. This consisted of stock animals, farming utensils, chaise, notes due to the estate, and any other personal estate whatsoever. Also on 1 April 1814, the other children of James and Elizabeth, for payment of $1,600, quitclaimed to David Carleton all their interest in the estate, both real and personal, of their honored father James Carleton. These were Amos Cutler and his wife Elizabeth of Rindge, Obediah Carleton of Rindge, Jacob Haskell and Susanna his wife of Harvard, Massachusetts, and Luther Page and Polly his wife of Weathersfield, Vermont. On 11 November 1814, in consideration of $100, John Streeter of Weathersfield, Vermont quitclaimed his interest in the estate of his honored grandfather James Carleton to David Carleton. On 18 August 1815, Obadiah Streeter and Polly Streeter of Weathersfield quitclaimed their interests in the estate to David Carleton for payment of $132.[12]
