  • OBITUARY
  • Still another of Wellington's old hands has crossed over the Great Divide, this

being the second in the space of a few days, and strange to relate, they were old friends. The person referred to is Mrs. Mary Connell, wife of Mr. William Connell, of Maughan Street, who died on Friday night after a brief illness. Her friend was the late Mrs. Reidy, the latter being the first person who spoke to Mrs. Connell when she arrived in Wellington, and the friendship remained unbroken until death claimed both women within a few days of each other. The late Mrs. Connell was a native of Windsor, and with her sister came to Wellington some 50 or 60 years ago, and remained here ever since. Like all the old hands she had seen the town and district undergo many changes, and the railway replaced the old waggons as a mode of travelling, a vast bush transformed into a rich fertile wheat growing district. She married and reared a large family. The late Mrs. Connell was a woman who did not go much into the limelight, always being content with her home life, and the bringing up of her children. Up till about the beginning of the year, Mrs Connell had enjoyed real good health, but it was about this time she began to fail, some few weeks ago she was compelled to take to her bed, and for the last week it was known that it was only a matter of time, still many of her friends hoped for the best. She lingered on until Friday night when she passed away. During her long residence here she made many friends. She is survived by a husband and grown up family, the sons and daughters being Messrs John (Haddon Rigg Station near Warren), Ernest and Walter (Wellington), Mrs. S. J. Matthews (Wellington), Mrs. Bert Rope (Sydney), and the Misses Ruby and Lucy Connell (Wellington). Her only surviving brother, Mr. Thomas Carney, resides in Queensland. The funeral took place yesterday afternoon, and was a large and representative one. The remains were taken to the R.C. Church where a short service was conducted by Rev. Mon. Long, and were afterwards laid to rest beside those of her son Bernard, in the R.C. portion of the local cemetery, the prayers at the graveside being readby Rev. Mon. Long. The funeral arrangements were carried out by Mr. C. J. Shakespeare.
