Mon 17 Aug 1931 Page 2 WILLIAM JOHN CONNELL. WILLIAM JOHN CONNELL. The month of August has been responsible for many of our old hands going 'West,' and on Thursday night last another fine old man passed away at his home in Maughan Street. This was Mr. William John Connell, who had just reached his 83rd year. It was on his birthday, on the 23rd June last, that he first took ill, but it was the beginning of the end, a general break up of the system after a long life of one of our hardy natives, for the late Mr. Connell was born at Montefiores, so that it will be seen that he lived to see many changes take place in the town during his lifetime in this district. He followed the occupation of a drover, and in the early days had many long trips out back, going right into Queensland with stock, and having manythrilling experiences at times. He knew every nook and corner of the far outback. He loved the country, in which he spent practically the whole of his life, and did not care a jot about going to the city to spend a holiday. He was a man of a very happy and genial disposition, and was an ideal type of our hardy pioneers. He retired from active work many years ago, and lived quietly with his family in Maughan Street. His wife predeceased him about seven years ago. His only surviving brother resides at Young, and he was present during the last illness. A grown-up family of sons and daughters survive, the sons being Messrs Ernest (Wellington) John and Wally (Warren), the daughters being Mrs. S. J. Matthews, Misses Ruby and Lucy (Wellington) and Mrs. B. Rope (Sydney). The remains were encased in a polished maple coffin, and on Friday a short service was held at St. Patrick's Church by Rev. Father O'Donnell, and afterwards the remains were laid to rest in the Catholic portion of the Wellington cemetery, beside those of his late wife, the services at the graveside being read by the Rev. Father O'Donnell. His four nephews acted as pall-bearers. The funeral arrangements were carried out by Mr. C. J. Shakespeare.
