Diana was born about 1800 in Providence, Rhode Island to Thomas and Clarissa Carr (or Carre).
It is possible John Smart married Diana Carr about 1815. There is a colored family in the 1820 and 1830 Census with John Smart as the head of the family.[1][2] In 1840, Diana Smart is head of the family and indicates there are 2 children between the ages of 10-24; and 1 girl of the same age group. 1 woman between the ages of 35 and 55, most likely herself. They are listed under: Free Colored Persons. [3]
In 1850 Diana Smart was living with her sister (or married daughter) and three sons.[4]
In 1860 Diana Smart, estimated birth year, 1798, is living with Susan Jackson age 40, and Clarissa Jackson age 35. Their relationship is not defined. Diana is working as a charwoman. In 1866, Clarissa Jackson died. She was born in Providence, RI. Her death certificate identified her father as John Smart (Africa) and her mother as Diana Smart (New Port, RI). Her husband was Benjamin Jackson.[5]
Dianna C. Smart died 15 May 1865 at the age of 65. She was a widow. Her parents were Thomas (1750) and Clarissa Carr (1755). [6]
