Biography

(Written from the perspective of Jessie Gregor.

My great-uncle, Frederick George Carter, was born on the 12th August 1898 in Southwark, London.[1] He was the oldest son of five born to George Carter and Lizzie Mason. He was baptised on the 13th November 1898 at St Paul, Westminster Bridge Road, Southwark. That record confirms his father's occupation as a fruit salesman and their address was 21 Garden Row, London.[2]

(Although his birth and baptism were both registered as Frederick George there is a bit of discrepancy in the records. For instance, he was George Frederick in the 1901 Census but Frederick George in the 1911 one. He was definitely known as George, though, throughout his life! In addition to my mum's tales, I have audio tapes of family memories given by his cousin, Eileen, in which she called him George, or captions in my Auntie Jo's photo album, and also it can be seen on official records such as being listed as George Carter, the licensee of The Britannia Margate from 1938.)

In George's first census in 1901, he was aged 2 and living with his family in four rooms at 14 Handforth Road, Lambeth.[3] The head of the household was father, George S. Carter, aged 34, fruit salesman. The two other inhabitants were mother, Mary Elizabeth Carter, aged 23, and baby brother, Leonard Charles, just five months old.

By the 1911 Census,[4] the family had moved to 114 Arngask Road, Catford and they were now living in five rooms! George is listed as a scholar, aged 12, living with his parents and his three younger brothers, Leonard Charles (10), Cecil John (8) and Kenneth Ronald (5 months).

George married Florence Margaret Lockyer in 1922 in the Lewisham district.[5] I think the couple only had one child: Margaret Lockyer Carter, born on the 30th July 1923 in Lewisham who married George Henry Frampton and died on the 15th May 2012.)

George was living at 10 Levington Road, Hendon, Middlesex when he registered his father's death on the 9th April 1934.

In the 1939 Register, George was living at the Britannia Public House, 42 Fort Road, Margate, Kent.[6] The record also confirms his birth date as the 12th August 1898 and gives his occupation as licensee, late Covent Garden salesman. He is living with wife Florence and two other adults: Reginald E Ford, a barman, and Alec Stansfelt, retired, of independent means. There is also one redacted record which is probably daughter, Margaret.

George passed away on the 30th January 1955 at 42 Hereford Road, Paddington, London.[7] According to his death certificate, he was a wholesale fruit and vegetable salesman, aged 56. The certified cause of death was '1a. Acute Myocarditis. b. Gastric Influenza. 2. Carcinoma of Larynx'. The death was registered on the 31st January 1955 by F. M. Carter, widow of deceased, present at the death.
