Margaret "Maggie" Cashin was born on 28 September 1871 in Graystown, County Tipperary, Ireland. Her parents were Patrick Cashin and Ellen Finnane.[1][2]

She arrived in New York circa 1889[3] and married James (Cormack) McCormack approximately five years later, on 28 April 1895.[4] Their known children are:

The 1900 U.S. Census and 1905 New York Census both show James and Maggie McCormack living in a tenement at 226 West 61st Street, Manhattan, New York.[5][6] James is listed as a Boilermaker. Other relatives living nearby include Maggie's sister, Catherine "Kate" Hackett, and a brother, William Francis Cashin.

On 23 November 1908, Maggie Cashin was admitted to St. Luke's Hospital with pulmonary tuberculosis.[7] She died five months later, on 30 April 1909.[8] She and her husband are buried in Calvary Cemetery (Section 18, Plot Z, Grave 6) in Woodside, Queens, New York.[9]

Research Notes

There is a "Maggie Cashin", age 17, who arrived in Manhattan, New York on The Germanic in 1890. Coincidentally, she appears to be travelling with a 23-year-old "Michael Finnan" - perhaps a cousin? ( Freeth-52 09:51, 30 June 2016 (EDT) )

Some online family trees list a seventh child named Aloysius Matthew McCormack who was born in 1907 and claims to be the son of James McCormack/Maggie Cashin on his 1926 marriage record. Perhaps this is what he was told. However, his NYC birth certificate lists his mother as 17-year-old Thomasine McCormick and his birthplace as Misericordia Hospital on 86th Street. Could Thomasine have been a relative of James and/or Maggie McCormack? I will create a separate profile to try and explore his ancestry. - Freeth-52 06:16, 23 March 2022 (UTC)
