Michael Cashman was born in Ireland in 1825.
It is not known exactly when he immigrated to America, but certainly by the time of the 1850 census, when he was a laborer in Cambridge, Massachusetts, with a wife (Mary) and a young daughter (Joanna).

Michael Cashman 35 yrs, Mary 33 yrs, Joanna 12 yrs, Jas 9 yrs, Margaret 6 yrs, Mary 5 yrs, John 3 yrs, resided in 1860 in Somerville, Middlesex, MA. [2]
Michael was a 36 year old laborer and resident of Somerville in 1864, when he enlisted to serve in the Civil War. He mustered in as a private in Company G of the 59th Mass. Infantry, on March 4, 1864. He was transferred to the 57th Mass. Infantry in June of 1865. He mustered out on July 30, 1865, at Washington, D.C.[3]
After the war, he returned to his family in Somerville. They moved to back to Cambridge, about 1873, where he remained for the rest of his life. He became a naturalized citizen of the United States in 1876.[4] They had 5 children: Joanna, James, Margaret, Mary, John and Michael.
Michael died in Cambridge, in 1885. He was 61 years old.[5] He is buried at the Catholic Mount Auburn Cemetery in Watertown, Massachusetts.[6]
