John J. Cassada was born about 1831 in Virginia. He married Lucy Ann Turner in Pittsylvania, Virginia on December 12, 1852.

The marriage record did not list parents for John or Lucy.

In 1860 in Laurel Grove, southern Pittsylvania, John and Lucy Cassada are shown with son George W. Cassada, born about 1858.

John enlisted in the CSA May 30, 1861, joining the local Company C of the 38th Virginia Infantry. He attained rank of 2nd Lieutenant.

On May 23, 1864, Lt. John Cassada died of wounds suffered likely at the Battle of Drewry's Bluff the week before.
