Castle and three other fettlers were working under the direction of Fraser on the down fast line, upon which a train was approaching, another also approaching on the up fast line. John Burns, one of the fettlers, sates that he jumped up the western embankment, and Fraser and Castle tried to cross to the eastern side. Fraser had almost cleared the down slow line when he was struck by an engine driven by Anthony Hunt and killed instantly. Nobody saw Castle struck, but he was found lying dead about thirteen paces from where Fraser was lying; his body was shockingly mutilated. According to The Sun newspaper, his head was completely severed. The City Coroner found that John Castle died "from injuries accidentally received though being knocked down by Railway Engine No,625...! The Coroner was also of the view that further precautions should be taken in Sydney and elsewhere for the safety on men working on the railway lines. [2]; [3]
