Bragernes, on the northern, and Strømsø, on the southern shore of the Drammen river, emerged in the 16th century as two small ports, mainly due to lumber export. They were separated from Lier parish and established as the new Bragernes parish in 1743. Together they formed Drammen, which got its city privileges in 1811. Strømsø was established as a separate parish in 1843. Ecclesiastically, Bragernes and Strømsø are still separate entities, with their own parish registers.
