This church was a member of the Roanoke Missionary Baptist Assocation, which was started at the Haven Creek Missionary Baptist Church on Roanoke Island. The Haven Creek Church was organized in 1862, when slaves from the mainland began to arrive on Roanoke Island, which was a "safe haven" for those escaping from the Confederacy.
