Department of Texas was established April 21, 1861. Embraced the State of Texas. Divided into two districts February 10, 1862, called the Eastern and Western. Merged into the Trans-Mississippi Department May 26, 1862.

Commanded by: Colonel Earl Van Dorn, assumed April 21, 1861. Brigadier-General P O Hebert, assigned August 14, 1861; assumed September 18, 1861. Colonel H E McCulloch, temporarily from September 4 to 18, 1861.
