Methodist Denominations resulted from the ministry of John Wesley in England. John Wesley, an Anglican priest, did not intend to found a separate church, but his followers preferred to form their own churches.

This religion stems much from Methodist theology and practice within the teachings of John and Charles Wesley, both of whom were priests of the Church of England. As affirmed by the Articles of Religion, Methodists recognize two Sacraments as being ordained of Christ: Baptism and Holy Communion.

Today most of the denominations tracing their ancestry to John Wesley participate in the World Methodist Council.
