According to the Aiken County Historical Society, this cemetery was established in 1852. It was the only burial ground for African Americans in Aiken until the mid-1900s. It was originally called the Aiken Colored Cemetery. It includes graves of slaves, free people of color, and freedmen from the mid-to-late 1800s. It also includes many prominent African Americans.

The cemetery was listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 2007.
