Before 1867, see Tecumseth Township, Canada West.
Tecumseth Township was surveyed in 1819 and 1832. The first influx of settlers came about 1820, with most settling in the southeast quarter of the township. As a result of municipal restructuring, Alliston, Beeton, Tecumseth, and Tottenham were amalgamated in 1991 to form the Town of New Tecumseth.
