Biography

Born in 1878 near Beeton, Ontario, ^[1][2], William was the eldest child of Robert Banting and Mary Jane Cruthers.

He grew up on the family farm in Tecumseth, Simcoe County, Ontario.^[3] His mother died when he was seven. After his father remarried, he lived with his father, his stepmother Annie, and Mary, Annie's sister.^[4]

By 1901, William had moved across the country to British Columbia and was working as a labourer.^[5] In 1911 he worked as a storekeeper in Edgewood, Kooteney West, British Columbia.^[6][7]According to Wrigley's British Columbia Directory of 1918,^[8] William ran the general store in the village, which is on the west side of Arrow Lake, at the entrance to Fire Valley.

William never married. He died suddenly in Edgewood in 1951 and was buried in the Bond Head United Church Cemetery, Bond Head, Ontario.^[9]
