First settled in 1872 when the Canada Southern Railway was built, a post office and general store opened and the tiny settlement became known as Henderson. In 1887 the community became the village of Tilbury Centre. The name changed again to Tilbury a few years later. The village became the Town of Tilbury in 1910. January 1, 1998 marked the end of the Town of Tilbury as it was known. The now former town of Tilbury became a community within the new city of Chatham-Kent. Located in the township of East Tilbury. The current Municipality of Chatham-Kent was created in 1998 by the merger of Kent County and its municipalities. Included the Town of Tilbury and is a single-tier municipality in Southwestern Ontario.
