Jonathon was born in 1740 and baptised at St Deiniol, Hawarden, Flintshire, Wales, on 28 September 1740, "Jonathan son of Samuel Catheral of Ewloe".[1]
He came to Yorkshire about 1760 with his elder brother Stephen. He married Elizabeth France on 16 May 1762 at Halifax, Yorkshire: Jonathan Cathall, potter, Elizabeth France, spinster, both marked with a cross. Witnesses were James Akroyd and Stephen Cathrall (brother).[2]
He died on 11 August 1807 and was buried at Mount Zion Chapel, Ovenden. His gravestone reads: Here lieth the body of ELIZABETH the wife of JONATHAN CATHERALL of SWILILL END POTTERY who departed this life on the 25th day of November 1799 in the 55th year of her age. Be ye also ready. Also the aforesaid JONATHAN CATHERALL her husband who departed this life August 11th 1807 aged 67 years.[3]
