Biography

Stephen was born about 1763, estimated from parents' marriage, census, and age at death.

He followed his father's trade of potmaking, and seems to have taken over part of the business after his father's death in 1807, as he is listed in land tax returns 1808 for land his father had held from Richard Lister.[1]

He married Mary Riley on 28 October 1805 at Halifax. Stephen Catherall of Ovenden, potmaker, Mary Riley of the same place, spinster. Both signed. Witnesses were James Riley and George Child.[2]

They had children Betty (1807) and Stephen (1812) but Mary died in 1813. It is said that she took her own life and this may have been a factor in Stephen's later mental health struggles. He was in both Manchester and Wakefield asylums at different times. He was released from Wakefield on 4th June 1824 when he was "Discharged, but not cured, in consequence of his brothers having certified their ability to support him without parochial assistance".[3][4] However he was re-admitted in 1839, was still there in the 1841 census and he died there in October 1841.[5][6]

He was buried at St Mary, Illingworth, Halifax, on 22 October 1841, the same church as his wife Mary had been buried nearly 30 years before.[7]

Research Notes

No baptism found for Stephen. He has been added on the basis of family connections. However, there is a baptism of "Stephen son of Stephen Catherall of Southowram" on 5 May 1763 at Elland. If the son of Stephen Catherall senior (Jonathan's brother) it cannot be this Stephen as Stephen senior had a son Stephen baptised 1772, so presumably the first one may have died. But it may be a mistake in the copying - there is another "son of Stephen" on the line above, and the text looks like the main church copy rather than original chapel register. So it is possible it should read Stephen son of Jonathan, which would fit with the dates as Jonathan's next son was baptised two years later, also of Southowram.[8]
