Biography

Daniel J. Caudill was born about 1848 in Ashe County, North Carolina. He was the son of Daniel C. Caudill and Winifred Shumate. ^[1]

Daniel married Judia Jones on the 28th of August 1874 in Alleghany County, North Carolina. The wedding was held at the home of Wiley Caudill and the ceremony was officiated by the Reverend J. J. Caudill. ^[2]

At the time of the 1880 census, Daniel and Juda Caudill had three children (Corsenia, Dora, and Dixon) and were residing in the Prather's Creek Towship of Alleghany County, North Carolina. Juda's brothers Craig and Millard Jones were both living on neighboring farms. ^[3]

By the time of the 1900 census, Daniel and Juda Caudill were no longer living together. The location of Daniel is unknown, although there is a family legend that he had "moved to Colorado with a bag of gold and was never heard from again". Juda was living in Prathers Creek on the farm of her brother Allen Jones. She was listed as divorced and 46 years old (born in Dec 1853). She was also listed as the mother of 9 children, with 8 of them still alive at the time, although none of them were living in the same household. ^[4]
