Biography

China was born in 1871. She is the daughter of Nancy Malinda Brown.

The United States, Social Security Numerical Identification File for her lists her parents as Hiram Chadwell and Nancy M Brown, gives her birth date as 6 Aug 1872, and gives her name as China Charwell Bray.[1] The 6 Aug 1872 birth date conflicts with that of her sister Matilda Chadwell, born 8 Sep 1872, so probably 1871; the 1880 census shows China as older than Matilda.

The 1880 census[2] shows her in the household of her parens, Hiram Chadwell and Malinda Chadwell, with four siblings. it gives her age as 9. The family is residing in Rose Hill, Lee, Virginia, United States.

There is a marriage record for (as transcribed, no image) Chunie (Unknown) Chadwun (Unknown) marrying S S Bray in Claiborne, Tennessee, United States on 28 Sep 1894.[3] The social security record, which lists her parents an dbirth in Lee, Virginia, gives he last name a "Bray", and the marriage date of 1894 is reasonable for a woman born in 1872, so this is her.

The 1900 census[4] shows her and her husband Steven Bray in Claiborne, Tennessee, United States with three children:
Johnnie Bray, 4
Gillis Bray, 3
Ira S Bray, 1

in 1910 [5] she and husband S. S. Bray are in Bell, Kentucky, United States with children: Johnie Bray, 14
Gilles Bray, 12
Sherman Bray, 9
Hiram Bray, 6
Williams F Bray, 4
Chas A Bray, 1

In 1930[6] she and husband Stephen S Bray are in Beaver, Taney, Missouri, United States.

In 1940, she and husband S. S. Bray are living in Loma, Mesa, Colorado, United States in the household of their son, William Bray, with son Charlie Bray.
