James 'Eddie' Chaffin
MISSOULA - James "Eddie" Chaffin, 81, of Missoula, passed away on Wednesday, Jan. 12, 2000, at the Mountain Valley Hospice House.
He was born Dec. 3, 1918, in Corvallis, a son of Earl and Viola Chaffin. Eddie was raised and educated in Corvallis and in 1942 enlisted in the U.S. Army. While in the Army, he was in the Alaska Detachment invasion and was stationed in Nevada and New Mexico in the testing grounds for gas warfare. He received his honorable discharge in 1945.
Eddie married Alvina Schweitz on Sept. 17, 1942, in Salmon, Idaho, and she now survives him at the family home. He worked for Dennis R. Washington for over 20 years until his retirement. Eddie enjoyed gardening, woodworking and fishing with grandson Brent.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Chester and Harry Chaffin, and his beloved grandson, Brent Jones.
He is now survived by his wife Alvina at the family home in Missoula; James Chaffin and daughter-in-law Nancy, and daughter Beverly Jones and son-in-law Ron, all of Missoula; grandchildren Lance and Chong Jones and James Donald Brent Chaffin; four sisters, Madge Buck of Corvallis, Lucille McCullum of Oakland, Calif., Myrtle Cunliffe of Missoula, and Babe Mayer of Othello, Wash.; and his special friend Moua Su Bliaya of Santa Ana, Calif.
Private family viewing has taken place. Funeral services will be held on Monday, Jan. 17, at 11a.m. at Garden City Funeral Home and Crematory. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Cemetery with military graveside honors.
Arrangements are under the care and direction of Garden City Funeral Home and Crematory.
