Biography

Thomas was born in 1840.[1] He was the son of Thomas Champion and Matilda Gooda.

In the 1841 UK Census he was 11 months old, living with his parents in Mount Pleasant Terrace, Tonbridge, Kent, England. His father was a Cordwainer (shoemaker).

At the age of 9 Thomas emigrated from England to South Africa with his family, travelling on board the ship King William. They sailed from London and Plymouth on 20 October 1849, and landed at Port Natal on 23 January 1850, under master Benjamin Avery. [2]

His father died in 1860.

Thomas was a Master Mariner. He gained his Certificate of Competency as 2nd Mate on 19 October 1863.

At the age of 25 he married 20 year old Sarah Atkinson (the daughter of William Greenhalgh Atkinson) on 3 April 1866 at All Saints, Liverpool, Lancashire.[3]

They had one daughter: Sarah Edith (baptised on 24 February 1867 at All Saints, Liverpool.

He was again awarded his Certificate of Competency as 2nd Mate on 11 May 1866, and as First Mate on 6 November 1867.

Thomas died in 1868 when the ship he was on was wrecked, near Arica, Peru. He was on board the brig Chañarcillo under Captain Fox when a massive earthquake occurred. It had an estimated magnitude of between 8.5 and 9.0. The earthquake triggered multiple tsunamis which drove three ships anchored in port nearly 800 metres (2,600 feet) inland, one of which was the brig Chañarcillo.[4] Captain Fox was on shore when the earthquake struck and despatched a boat to bring his crew to shore to help the people that were buried by falling debris. Thomas was one of eight men left on board in charge of the ship, whilst the rest of the crew were ashore. All eight men perished when the tsunami struck.
