Biography

David engaged in farming in Coffee County, Alabama.

David Pierce Chancey was born on 18 April 1892 in Enterprise, Coffee County, Alabama, United States.[1] His parents were James Monroe Chancy (1862-1947) and Sarah Elizabeth (Hildreth) Chancy (1860-1933).[2] This generation began to spell their surname CHANCEY rather than CHANCY.

David P. Chancey was 8 years old when the 1900 United States Census was taken. He was living in the household of his parents, 5 siblings, and a boarder in Enterprise Village, Coffee County, Alabama.[3]

When the 1910 United States Census was taken, David P. Chancey was living with his parents and 3 of his siblings in Enterprise, Coffee County, Alabama. He was 18 years old and working as a farm laborer on the home farm.[4]

D. P. Chancey was married to Era Mae Snell (1890-1929) on 15 December 1917 in Dale County, Alabama.[5] They were the parents of one child, Kathleen (Chancey) Baker (1919-2002) who is deceased.[6]

David P. Chancey, his wife Era, and their 5-month-old daughter, were enumerated as a household on the 1920 United States Census. They were living in Clintonville, Coffee County, Alabama. David was 28 years old. His occupation was described as being a "broker of products."[7]

David's wife, Era Mae, died in 1929. He was recorded as a widower on the 1930 United States Census. He and his daughter Kathleen were living in the household of David's parents in Clintonville, Coffee County, Alabama. David was 37 years old and working as a farm laborer.[8]

David Chancey married Mattie Belle Newton (1906-1976) after 1930 and before 1940, likely before 1933 when the older of their two children was born. (Source needed) One of their two children, Jane (Chancey) Dubberly (1933-2021), is deceased, but the other may still be living.

Dave, Mattie, and 3 children made up their household when the 1940 United States Census was taken. They lived on West Henry Street in Enterprise, Coffee County, Alabama. Dave, who was 46 years old, was working as a traveling salesman of wholesale general merchandise.[9]

Dave, his wife Mattie, and their two teen-aged children were living in Clintonville, Coffee County, Alabama when the 1950 United States Census. Dave, who was 57 years old, was again making a living as a farmer.[10]

David Pierce Chancey passed away on 29 December 1961 in Enterprise, Coffee County, Alabama. He was 69 years old.[2] He was buried in Enterprise City Cemetery, Enterprise, Coffee County, Alabama.[11]
