  • Research data maintained and developed by Wayne and Jeannie Wilkins to continue the research given us in 1987 by Auntie Ardelle and Uncle Eulis Hays, now deceased.

The family tragedy which caused a month’s delay is given verbatim (undated) from Aunt Mary (Ennes) Landauer’s comments to Ardelle Hays:

“. . .Mattie – Martha Jane Chandler. Had beautiful long red hair. Was a sensitive person. Enroute by wagon train to Oregon, while in Boise, Idaho, she went to buy supplies and was forcibly kidnapped by a man and a woman whom were seen driving away in a buggy with a screaming girl. (She) was taken to Calif gold field and forced into white slavery. Later married (Sacramento) – a man with an Italian name and was prosperous. She hired detectives, traced her family, came to Hillsboro, and called Mary Etta, but Mary Etta refused to receive her. Mary Etta went to see Mattie at her hotel in Hillsboro and refused her because of her life in prostitution. This was a day of extreme prudery. No information about possible children (My mother said she came home to die – but if so to whom? And when?) – where is “home” wvw?

12/16/2020 – MyHeritage member Leanna Reed gives Martha Jane Chandler, Died Ventura, Ventura County, California, on 27 January 1952. She was @79 years old apparently unmarried.

NOTE: Mattie is said (by Chandler/Yoacum researcher Kelley Sullivan), to have written in the family Bible when she departed with her parents Marcus and Mahala Jane from Linden, Christian County, Missouri. Presumably the Bible belonged to either her grandmother Chandler or Yoachum (See photo page 33) and perhaps this is the “home” where Martha Jane may have “gone home to Linden to die”.

Mary Etta later said if she had to do it over she would have treated her sister better.”

Ardelle’s marginal comments to the above: 1881 18 years old – family waited a month trying to find her – when was this (came to Hillsboro)? After Marcus died could have been 1916. And, researcher has been unsuccessful to verify any “Vanoni/Veroni” has married a Martha/Mattie in the several counties around Sacramento, California, between 1881 and 1920. Mattie will have been 53 years old (born13 Feb 1863) and, further presumed she was going home to her Chandler-Yoachum family in Linden, Christian County, Missouri.
