John C. Chaney was born about 1785 in North Carolina. [Birth place Kentucky, or Mecklenburg County, North Carolina? Birth date 1781 or 1785 or 1796?]

Sometime about 1800 to 1810, he and Jemima moved to Kentucky.

In 1830, the Census misspelled his last name as Chainey. The household resided in Clark County, KY and consisted of:[3]

  • 13 persons total (no slaves).

In 1840, the household resided in Estill County, KY (about 40 km southeast of Clark County) and consisted of:[4]

  • 1 free white male 15-19.
  • 1 free white female 15-19.
  • 1 free white male 20-29.

  • 1 of these people was employed in agriculture (himself).
  • 1 of these people over 20 could not read or write.
  • 8 persons total (no slaves).

In 1850, he was 65, residing in Estill County, Kentucky with his wife Jemima, 62, and their son Daniel, 24. He was born about 1785 in North Carolina. His occupation was farmer. He owned $400 as real estate.[5]

In 1860, he was 80, residing in Estill County, Kentucky (Irvine Post Office) with his wife Gemma, 75. He was born about 1780 in North Carolina. His occupation was farmer. Children:

  1. Judith Chaney (1807-1865) who married Jessie Powell.
  2. Elizabeth Chaney (1809-?) who married John Elledge.
  3. Ann Chaney (1810-?).
  4. John C. Chaney (1811-1865) who married Sarah Allen.
  5. Joseph Chaney (1813 or 1814-?) who married Nancy Tipton.
  6. William Chaney (1817-1892).
  7. James Chaney (1818-1887).
  8. Mary Polly Chaney (1818 or 1819-?) who married Clem Abney.
  9. Nancy Chaney (1819-?).
  10. Daniel Chaney (1821 or 1824-1886 or 1889 or 1898?) who married Jincy Tubs Barker.
  11. Sarah Chaney (1823-?) - possibly this Sarah Chaney? [Note from E.M as I'm attempting to clean up this list: I'm skeptical of her relation to her supposed father James and skeptical of his birth and death locations. He supposedly was born in South Carolina, moved to Kentucky, had her there, and then moved to and died in Louisiana. I have a hunch that she belongs to Chaney-462 instead.]
  12. Rebecca Chaney (1824-?).
  13. Hiram Chaney (1825-1898).
  14. Thomas Chaney (1826 or 1830-?).
