Biography

In 1850, the Chatham family lived in Floyd, Indiana. The household included Josiah W. Chatham, (49), born in Tennessee, with $1700 in real estate; his wife Sarah, 49, born in North Carolina, who could not read or write; their seven children, all born in Indiana: Matilda, 25; Polly, 23; Anna, 20; Margaret, 17, in school; Francis, 12, in school; Sarah J., 9; and Amanda, 6.^[1]

In 1860, the Chatham family lived on their large farm in Floyd, Putnam, Indiana. The household included Josiah W. Chatham, 58, born in Tennessee, a farmer, with $4000 in real estate and $100 in personal estate, who could not read or write; his wife, Sarah, 58, born in Kentucky, could not read or write; their children, all born in Indiana, Ann, 29; Francis M., 22, a farmer; Sarah, 19; and Amanda, 16; and her husband, Jos. A. Mundy, 18, b. Indiana, a farmer (they were married within the year). [5] Note: Amanda may have been recorded in error as the wife of Jos. A. Mundy (She appears as Amanda CHATHAM on this Census). I could not find any evidence that she married MUNDY in 1859-60.

Francis married Sarah Davis in 1860 in Indiana. Absolom F. Wright officiated. ^[2]

Francis was a farmer in Floyd, Putnam County, Indiana.

In 1870, Francis & Sally lived on a farm in Floyd Township, Indiana with their children Rose (8yrs), son Marion (6) and Amanda (3). The farm was worth $3775, and personal assets valued $1097. Also living with them was a farm laborer, Joseph Lydick, 19yrs, born in Indiana. On a neighboring farm, lived Frances' parents and sister Ann (39). ^[3]

In 1880, Francis and Sarah lived on a farm in Floyd Township, Putnam, Indiana with their four children (dau. Rosella, 18; son Marion E., 16; and dau Manda E., 13; and son Lee E., 6. Francis was a farmer. He could read but he could not write. Living on a neighboring farm were his parents and sister (Josiah and Sarah, and Anna) ^[4]

In 1900 Francis and Sarch had been married for 39 years. Frances was still farming at the age of 62 in Floyd Township, Indiana. ^[5]

Francis died at 71 years of age in Floyd, Indiana. He is buried with his wife in Clear Creek Cemetery, Putnam, Indiana. ^{[6] [7]}
