Biography

John Chester (surname later St Leger), the son of John Chester and Sophia Stuart, was born in 1823 at Goring, Oxfordshire, England.

He married Philippa Rooper on 8 April 1858 at St James, Westminster, London, England.^[1]

England and Wales Census 1861 at Master road, Belgrave, Barrow on Soar, Leicestershire with wife and children Arthur and Edith, occupation Army Major on half pay.

"By the 1870s the St Leger's Limerick estate had passed to Colonel John St Leger of 6, Park-hill, Rotherham, Yorkshire, a nephew of Harriet Chester Bagot [wife of Anthony Butler St Leger]. He is recorded as owning 2,900 acres in county Limerick. He had taken the name St Leger in 1863.^[2]

In 1871, age 47, he was a "Colonel in the army and Landed Proprietor", head of a Park Hill, Firbeck, Firbeck, Nottinghamshire household living wiht his wife and 7 children. ^{[3] [4]}

In 1901, he was recorded aged 77, a "Retired Colonel in the Army JP & DL", the married head of household at [Sealfield House,] Esplanade, Kirkley, Suffolk.^[5]

John St Leger died in 1905 at Suffolk, England.^[6]
