Biography

Elizabeth _ was the wife of William Ellis. She is named in a land record and will, however her last name is not given.

In various family trees, she is suggested to be Elizabeth Chew, estimated as born about 1705-1715 likely in Virginia, based on William's information. That last name is listed here for consideration, but is without evidence. Some family trees confuse her with a different person Elizabeth Beverly Chew.

She married William Ellis. Some trees suggest that she and William married in 1729 in Middlesex, Virginia. However no source is identified to support this.

William Ellis and Elizabeth, his wife, acquired 470 acres of land in St. George's Parish, Spotslyvania County, Virginia on 2 Jul 1751.[1]

William Ellis of Spotslyvania County, Virginia, died 19 May 1766, will probated 4 Aug 1766. His will identifies his wife Elizabeth, sons Hezekiah, William and John Ellis, daughters Mary Proctor, Elizabeth Hawkins, Ann O'Neal, and Agnes Ellis. His will indicates that one of his sons was under twenty years old. Also names Col. Joseph Brock. Wife Elizabeth exec. (Will Book D, p. 241) [2]

"ELLIS, WILLIAM, Spotsylvania co., d. May 19, 1766, p. Aug. 4, 1766. Wit. W. Wood, John Gordon, Isaac Wilson, James Dudley. Ex. wife, Elizabeth; sons Hezekiah and William Ellis, Col. Joseph Brock. Leg. Daughter Mary Proctor; son Hezekiah Ellis; daughter Elizabeth Hawkins; daughter Ann O'Neal; son William Ellis; son John Ellis (when he is of age, meaning under 21); daughter Agnes Ellis (when she is of age). If my wife should die before my son arrives at the age of twenty years, I desire that Robert O'Neal take his estate into possession. (Page 241). If wife dies or remarries before Agnes is of age, Hezekiah to be her guardian"

As Elizabeth is named in William's 1766 will, she would have died after 1766, likely in Virginia.

Known children per William's 1766 will, assumed to be his children with Elizabeth:[2]

  • Hezekiah Ellis
  • William Ellis
  • John Ellis
  • Mary (Ellis) Proctor
  • Elizabeth (Ellis) Hawkins
  • Ann (Ellis) O'Neil
  • Agnes Ellis

Chew-1208 and Chew-1040 appear to represent the same person because: Both are profiles for wife of William Ellis, father of Hezekiah Ellis. Elizabeth and Hezekiah are named in Williams 1766 will, which is also why she has death date listed as after 1766. The maiden name of Chew is speculative, as discussed in the profile. These are duplicate profiles that should be merged.

The maiden name 'Chew' needs research - but for now, i'm adding it . . .
