He is the son of Darby Chilcote and Sarah Unknown.

US Census: Alvah was living in Cromwell Twp, Huntingdon Co., Pa in 1840. In the household were two males under 5 and one male between 30 and 40 and one female under five and one female between 30 and 40^[1]
