Josiah was born in Barnstable, Massachusetts, in 1823, the son of David Childs and Sally Coombs.
Josiah married Adulsa Nickerson in 1844. They had one daughter before Adulsa died in 1848. (The child, born Flora Augustine, was legally renamed Adulsa Nickerson Childs in honor of her late mother.)
He remarried in 1849 to Harriet A. Brown. They had 3 children, of which two reached adulthood. The family moved to New Bedford, Massachusetts, by 1870. Harriet died there in 1883.
He married for a third and final time to Harriet B. Taber in 1885.
By 1883, he had founded J. G. Childs & Son, a wholesale fish dealing business in New Bedford, Massachusetts, with his son Augustine. The two also worked with other fish dealers in business undertakings, such as "Childs & Peckham" (1887) with Frank Peckham, and "Childs & Eldridge" with Fred Eldridge (1883).
"J. G. Childs & Son" is listed up until 1898 in the city directories of New Bedford. [1]. Josiah seems to have retired shortly after that, and his son Augustine became president at another fish business (or perhaps he just renamed the old business?) Either way, Josiah was retired by the time of the 1900 census.
He died in December of 1901 and was buried at the Riverside Cemetery in Fairhaven, Massachusetts.
