FROM WESTHAMPTON, MASSACHUSETTS, CHURCH RECORDS.
A rather interesting story about Lewis Chilson that shows the way it was in the Puritan/Congregational.
Church in New England... 1
7 Jan 1824--"A complaint brought by Deacon Pliny Sikes charging brother Lewis CHILSON with having neglected more than 2 years both the preaching of the word and the Lord's table was read. The pastor stated that he had sent him a copy of the complaint with notice to appear to answer at this time and place to the church. Brother Richard Clapp informed that he had left the copy of the complaint at the house of said brother Lewis CHILSON. Maj. A. Fisher, Deacon Sikes, and Brother R. Clapp related his statements to them of his reasons for not attending, expressing his purpose not to attend. Voted that brother Richard Clapp see brother Lewis CHILSON and learn whether not attending the meeting of the church at this time be voluntary and unnecessary--and inform the pastor, that measures shall be taken as shall be proper." After this entry was a notation--"Brother Clapp informed the pastor that brother L. CHILSON'S non attendance was voluntary.".
19 May 1824--"An admonition prepared by the pastor to be given to brother Lewis CHILSON was read by the pastor and adopted by the brethren." (This was the required first admonition.).
24 Sept 1824--"An admonition prepared by the pastor was twice read, accepted, and voted to be administered as the church's second admonition to brother Lewis CHILSON, a week from the next Lord's day, in the manner directed, as to the other admonition which the church has ordered.".
Lord's Day, 3 Oct, 1824--"The admonition to brother Lewis CHILSON was publicly read, a notification had been previously sent to him to attend, but he did not.".
19 May 1825--"Voted to consider the case of Lewis CHILSON." "Voted to pronounce on him a sentence of excommunication. A sentence twice read was adopted, declaring Lewis CHILSON to be excommunicated from the fellowship of this church." (on file) "Voted that the sentences of excommunication of Joseph Norton, Lewis CHILSON, and Joseph Kingsley, Jr. be published by the pastor's reading them in this house on the Lord's day which shall be next after the sabbath on which the Lord's supper shall be administered here in July next." (The pastor of the church at this time was Enoch Hale.). 1
NOTE: By the time he was excommunicated from the Congregational Church, he had already been a member of the Baptist Church for a year. Is this harassment or what??. 1
