Zachariah Chipman was born either the 8th or 18th of April 1814 in Nova Scotia, the son of Thomas Holmes and Elizabeth (Andrews) Chipman. He married Mary Elizabeth DeWolfe on 15 September 1842 and the family soon moved to St. Stephen, where their numerous children were born.
When researching this photo, I discovered a bit of local history, as I live just a few miles from the Canadian border and St. Stephen. As it turns out, Zachariah Chipman was a wealthy businessman, so wealthy that some of the first paper money issued in St. Stephen bore his name (Z. Chipman).
Zachariah Chipman - Name on Money
When he died, Zachariah left a sizeable fortune, and donated many thousands to different Methodist churches in New Brunswick. His house was also converted into a hospital, though when exactly I do not know. I would have to dig deeper to discover the details behind that.
